Laws and regulations that apply

The first session is a no-nonsense introduction to the most important principles of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and the Plain Language ISO standard. We also look at specific laws and regulations in your country, region or industry.

We are based in the UK, but train around the world.

Plain language ISO standard

In the second session, you’ll take a rigorous look at each element of the checklist given in ISO 24495-1:2023: Plain language Part 1 Governing principles and guidelines.

We consider the full workflow, from understanding your reader and choosing a content format, to testing with users. We give equal time to each principle of the standard:

  • Principle 1: Readers get what they need (relevant).
  • Principle 2: Readers can easily find what they need (findable). 
  • Principle 3: Readers can easily understand what they find (understandable). 
  • Principle 4: Readers can easily use the information (usable).
This is comprehensive training, where we emphasise not only the principles, but also the process and workflow that will allow you to achieve the standard. We apply the principles to the content you want to focus on – whether it’s UX content, legal content, marketing content. Each type of content will have its own application of the standard.

Writing rules and guidelines

The third session zooms in on the most relevant  accessibility guidelines for content. We  include these elements from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG):

  • Guidance on ‘’Clear words’’
  • Heading hierarchy, content and syntax
  • Sentences: active voice, sentence length, and sentence complexity
  • Using negative words properly
  • When to use contractions
  • How to write and structure bullet points
  • How to use links
  • Basics of how to write for localisation
  • Inclusive writing accessibility guidelines

Writing for product microcopy: UX Writing guidelines

This optional session applies plain language and accessible content to microcopy for a digital app. We cover:

  • Forms: How to write clear field labels, placeholder text and error messages
  • How to write clear support messages
  • How to write clear error messages
  • How (and when) to write alternative text

Workflow and AI

 In the final session, you’ll learn what makes a successful content workflow. You’ll also get to explore which parts of the workflow can benefit from AI tools.
